A true innovator, Gerald has been delivering the goods for over 25 years and his music has influenced a generation of djs and producers. After speaking with Rambl about dancing, producing, passion and his search for something different, Gerald played a few of his favourite tracks for us. Enjoy!

This week we had local producer Ben Houghton on the show for a 40-minute live set from his MPC2000XL, hand-made 808-kick and laptop. Unfortunately his hard drive was in the process of dying and so a few old tunes had to be played in place of new ones and there were some rather tricky attempts to copy songs from the disk before it once-again ejected itself during the show which made for some hair-raising moments.
We started off with a few classic moments in 7″ bliss from a few years back, with the incredible D-F (Dam Funk) remix of Red: The Man Without The Machine’s tune “I Should Tell Ya Momma On You” on Stones Throw records (check out the original discovery of the man):

as well as jams from Busy and Maxmillian Dunbar (I accidentally referred to his label as Outrageous Soulz which is actually the name of the track, the label is Future Times). Then it was time for some Aussie representation on the new Roots Manuva album, with our man Dizz1 providing the track for the tune “Here We Go Again”, plus heaps of new music from James Blake, Emika, Aardvark, Bnjmn, Juk Juk, Four Tet, Sully, Ifan Dafydd and Zomby. We also had a listen to some local jams from Booshank, Kloke and Galambo before going into some classic moments in deep house from Omar-S and Blaze. Quality stuff.

I was also briefly joined by the man behind Galambo, Bryan Phillips, who was on the show a month or so back. He is launching the debut album “Andakoyo” this weekend at Bar Open, check the flyer below (it’s FREE!). The album has been receiving great reviews, and was recently played by the Gotan Project along with a track from the Cumbia Cosmonauts who will also be playing the gig. TIP!!

It’s going to be a great show with The Bamboos, Deadbeat, Mike Huckaby, Tim Exile, Matt Radovich, JPS and Rambl alongside the legendary Underground Resistance under their Galaxy 2 Galaxy moniker (there will be 8 of them!!). During the day there will be an information session with interviews from the artists and previous RBMA participants and representatives. All this for $20! Git DOWN!

As you can see, we were all about vinyl this week, the photo above is all the records that were played in order, excepting the fact that a different tune from the first record was played towards the end of the show. Note Martin’s signed copy of Suburban Knight. Classy. We may well put up the mix without our talking / stings if people are keen, let us know!

Rambl was joined in the studio this evening by Chilean artist, designer and musician Bryan Phillips aka Galambo, to talk about his new concept album, Andakoyo, as well as his recent move to Melbourne. Co-produced with head of Konn Records, The Peronists, Andakoyo is a beautiful 25-minute excursion into the tribal soul of Chilé, shifted through the prism of modern electronic and dance sounds. Recorded over a single week, the album utilises traditional rhythms, chants and instruments and features Chilean folk musician and poet Talo Pinto, alongside modern production techniques and sounds with elements of minimal house and techno. Slated for release in October with a 25 minute video (you can check out the teaser above), we listened to the entire piece with a brief interview during the middle.

Alongside some of the usual business, we also heard a little dedication to Underground Resistance (excuse my incorrect reference to “Return of the Dragon” – the track is “Journey of the Dragon”) who will be on these shores as Galaxy 2 Galaxy in September (!!) for the Notions of Sonic Space gig featuring Deadbeat, Mike Huckabee, Tim Exile, Melbourne’s JPS as well as The City Rises’ own Rambl. <itunes:summary>Rambl was joined in the studio this evening by Chilean artist, designer and musician Bryan Phillips aka Galambo (http://soundcloud.com/galambo), to talk about his new concept album, Andakoyo, as well as his recent move to Melbourne. Co-produced with head of Konn Records, The Peronists (http://soundcloud.com/theperonists), Andakoyo is a beautiful 25-minute excursion into the tribal soul of Chilé, shifted through the prism of modern electronic and dance sounds.

Alongside some of the usual business, we also heard a little dedication to Underground Resistance (excuse my incorrect reference to "Return of the Dragon" - the track is "Journey of the Dragon") who will be on these shores as Galaxy 2 Galaxy in September (!!) for the Notions of Sonic Space (http://redbullmusicacademy.com/worldtour/melbourne/) gig featuring Deadbeat, Mike Huckabee, Tim Exile, Melbourne's JPS as well as The City Rises' own Rambl. Be there!

So much great new stuff, and it just keeps on coming! Firstly, though, a little tribute to soul legend The Left Reverend Eugene McDaniels, whose amazing music has been sampled so many times it’s amazing he’s not more well known. Although I neglected to mention it on air, the jam I played, ‘Jagger the Dagger’, was a tribute to his passing the previous week. And so it goes…

For the rest, it was back-to-back beat business at the beginning, kicking things off with Baba-X’s new release for Melbourne collective // This Thing // (available free here), a couple of cuts from the new Project Mooncircle release, Finest Ego: Ireland UK (also available free here), new Com Truise, Ras G and a remix of Dennis Coffey by Shigeto from the Strut and Fat Beats release Outer Galaxies: Dennis Coffey Remixed) (also available free here).

How appropriate to have a photograph of The Sun Ra Arkestra playing a free concert in Melbourne’s Federation Square for the opening of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It was quite a show, too! 40 minutes of the most astounding, swinging and beautiful space jazz from the masters of the art. Look out for our stings from Arkestra member Knoel Scott, taking TCR into truly cosmic territory.

Speaking of, we started the week with a cut from another space jazz cat, Marcus Belgrave, who also worked with techno luminary Carl Craig. His jam Space Odyssey comes from his 1974 album, Gemini II. Check it. Also played the amazing Fantastic Mr Fox remix of Brandy’s Angel In Disguise and dedicated it to my super-hip friend, Izabel.
