The City Rises #066 w/ Ben Taaffe

A very special guest on the show this week in the form of Ben Taaffe. One of Perth’s finest selectors, co-host of “Underground Solution“, (an iconic and influential show on WA’s RTRFM) and all round nice guy. He took us on nothing short of a musical journey featuring new material from All City’s LA series, Joy O, Hype Williams, Mau’lin, Kidkanevil, Ghostpoet, Clustering Allusion and Charles-Eric Charrier amongst many others.

You might also note a couple of tracks on the Japanese Art Union label at the start of the show. There is some pretty terrible things happening to our neighbours up there so throw a few dollars their way and help out if you can via the Red Cross.

Loads of great stuff this week from around the globe but particularly from Australia! Yes that’s right, at some point I realised that I’d played around 7 tunes from our very own. So big ups and bless the local talent from the new Finest Ego New Zealand and Australian Beat Maker comp, Galapagoose on the We Love Kool Herc comp, new kid on the block Naminé and the amazing Kloke, sitting pretty alongside great sounds from Bibio of his new album on Warp, a cut from Fudge Fingas from his new album on Prime Numbers, the new Jacques Green on LuckyMe and tough stuff from Hyperdub’s Funkystepz.

Plus we had a chat and heard a set from the head honcho’s behind Melbourne’s Too Much! Dubstep parties, Same-O and David Bass in the lead up to tomorrow night’s show featuring the UK’s own Mosca, one of our favourite producers from the new school of English dubstep music. The City Rises #063 w/ Dan Beck

What a treat this week. First up I dropped a bunch of new tunes from the Finest Ego | New Zealand / Australian Beatmaker Compilation on Project Mooncircle. Not only does it showcase some ridiculously talented locals from the region, it’s also free! (Unless of course you want to grab the strictly limited cassette version). I could have easily played this whole comp for the first hour but your just going to have to grab a copy to hear it yourself.

I also squeezed in a tune from Declan Kelly aka Dream Kit from his forthcoming EP on Two Bright Lakes as well as the upcoming Inkswel on Boogie Bash. See, not everything comes out of LA!

Along with all the usual suspects you’d expect to hear on the show we also had Melbourne boy and Perth ex-pat Dan Beck in for a chat and a mix. Aside from being a really upstanding dude he threw down a really great and eclectic set that spanned about 20 years of music. Dan’s been DJ’ing a long time now and the breadth of his selection really showed this. Good to see him get his juke on!

The City Rises #053 w/ Tyson Ballard & Trus’me

Double the trouble this week, not one but two guests in the form of Adelaide’s Tyson ‘Bucking’ Ballard (Voyeurhythm Records) and the UK’s Trus’me (Prime Numbers). They treated us to some unreleased business as well as some classic tracks on the house tip. Tyson was in town for his Voyeurhythm party at Croft on Saturday. Speaking of parties, big shouts and happy birthday to Mr Declan Kelly, hitting 30 in style with a cracking warehouse party at Anytime Place in Brunswick. Post party I kicked things off in a hazy style with some downbeat business from FS Green, Ruckazoid and Machinedrum before moving into 4/4 territory as a warm up for the guests. Unfortunately some random fluff caused some grief on the new Shake remixes but you can be sure we’ll be caning those tracks for a while to come so it won’t be you’re only chance to hear them. See you next week!
